2. Horseradish Roots Natural , 1/2 pound , (No International Orders) Ready For Planting or Preparing As Sauces or Dressings etc. JACOBS LADDER

Feature

FRESH HORSERADISH ROOT, FROM LOCAL HORSERADHISH FARM.
Wrap in a damp paper towel to store, place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for several weeks. Note: Horseradish can develop soft or moldy spots without affecting the quality of the root itself. This is a natural characteristic of Horseradish and should simply be removed by scraping off.

Description

THIS IS FRESH HORSERADISH ROOT. THIS COMES FROM A LOCAL HORSERADISH FARM IN IL. YOU WILL RECIEVE EITHER A WHOLE ROOT OR SEVERAL PIECES OF FRESH ROOT WHICH EVER ADDS UP TO 1/2 POUND. The plant is probably native to southeastern Europe and western Asia. It is now popular around the world. It grows up to 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) tall, and is cultivated primarily for its large, white, tapered root.[ The intact horseradish root has hardly any aroma. When cut or grated, however, enzymes from the now-broken plant cells break down sinigrin (a glucosinolate) to produce allyl isothiocyanate (mustard oil), which irritates the mucous membranes of the sinuses and eyes. Grated mash should be used immediately or preserved in vinegar for best flavor. Once exposed to air or heat it will begin to lose its pungency, darken in color, and become unpleasantly bitter tasting over time. Freshly grated horseradish emits fumes that can make your nose run and irritate your eyes, so prepare it in a well-ventilated area or even outside if your eyes are extremely sensitive. Wrap in a damp paper towel to store, place in a plastic bag and refrigerate for several weeks. Note: Horseradish can develop soft or moldy spots without affecting the quality of the root itself. This is a natural characteristic of Horseradish and should simply be removed by scraping off. Horseradish should be scrubbed with a brush under running water, prior to use. Peel before using or grate with a sharp metal grater in the desired amount. THANK YOU FOR ORDER FROM A LOCAL USA SMALL FAMILY COMPANY. GOD BLESS , JACOBS LADDER ENT. USA PRODUCT , NOT FROM CHINA. Description

Oregon Coast Wasabi produces extremely high quality, flavorful, authentic, water-grown wasabi. Our wasabi are year-round edible greens. Non-GMO and gluten-free. These are Wasabia Japonica, Daruma.

We are the only commercial wasabi grower in Oregon. Our farm is located on the Oregon Coast where the climate is optimal for wasabi cultivation. It is humid, constantly cool and is blessed with pristine forest streams. With this ambient climate and our proven growing methodology, we replicate the cool alpine stream environment of the Japanese mountains, which is wasabi's natural habitat. Using the water-grown method, Oregon Coast Wasabi produces a superior product to most Asian-imported wasabi and of equal quality to the highest-grade product grown in Japan.

How to Manage Your Plants

Wasabi grows naturally in the wet, shaded banks of cold mountain streams on the islands of Japan. In your own garden, your plant will do the best in full shade in temperatures between 50-60 degrees F. Temperatures above 40 degrees can cause heat damage and leave your plant vulnerable to pests and disease. Temperatures below 40 degrees can slow growth (below 27 degrees can kill them.)

Wasabi plants can grow to 24 inches in height, so leave plenty of room for them to grow. Your plant will need a well-drained location. Prune regularly. (Detailed directions are included with purchase.)

IMPORTANT: Order before Fridays 12 pm Pacific Standard Time (PST) for shipping the following WEDNESDAY. If you order AFTER 12 PM Friday, your plants will be harvested and shipped out on the 2nd Wednesday after you order. We package the roots in thermal lining with ice packs in order to prevent transplant shock. We harvest, package, and ship only once per week to ensure your wasabi starts are fresh!

Description

Did you know the Horseradish plant is also known as Sting-Nose (Aromotacia Austicana). Horseradish is a member of the mustard family and is cultivated for its thick, fleshy white root. They grow large leafy foliage, reaching 18 inches wide and 24 inches tall. Horseradish has the power to "sting your nose". The aroma and bite is unnoticeable until it is grated or ground. When the root is grated and crushed, volatile oils (sothiocyanates) are released and with this bring the sting and heat that horseradish is known for. Actually Horseradish leaves are edible. However it is grown for its root. When the root is harvested and graded it is ready to use in many recipes and meat dishes. Horseradish ranks in the top five easiest-to-grow food plants.

These plants are top performers; a few roots will last a lifetime! Zones 4-8. The root is harvested in the spring and fall and sold in 1200 pound pallets to processors who grate the root releasing the volatile oils that distinguish horseradish from all other flavors. The ground horseradish is then mixed with distilled vinegar to stabilize the "heat." This basic formula, which varies from processor to processor, may also contain spices or other ingredients ...salt, sugar, cream or vegetable oil. But, generally speaking, horseradish and vinegar are the primary constituents in the basic prepared horseradish on the market today. What Makes Horseradish Hot? Horseradish is a member of the mustard family (sharing lineage with its gentler cousins, kale, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and the common radish) and is cultivated for its thick, fleshy white roots. The bite and aroma of the horseradish root are almost absent until it is grated or ground. During this process, as the root cells are crushed, volatile oils known as isothiocyanate are released. Vinegar stops this reaction and stabilizes the flavor. For milder horseradish, vinegar is added. Hardy in zones 4-8. Bohemian Horseradish is a Czechoslovakian variety that is very disease resistant.
