1. Side by Side: Parallel Histories of Israel-Palestine

Feature

New Press

Description

In 2000, a group of Israeli and Palestinian teachers gathered to address what to many people seemed an unbridgeable gulf between the two societies. Struck by how different the standard Israeli and Palestinian textbook histories of the same events were from one another, they began to explore how to disarm the teaching of the history of the Middle East in Israeli and Palestinian classrooms.

The result is a riveting dual narrative of Israeli and Palestinian history. Side by Side comprises the history of two peoples, in separate narratives set literally side-by-side, so that readers can track each against the other, noting both where they differ as well as where they correspond. The unique and fascinating presentation has been translated into English and is now available to American audiences for the first time.

An eye-openingand inspiringnew approach to thinking about one of the worlds most deeply entrenched conflicts, Side by Side is a breakthrough book that will spark a new public discussion about the bridge to peace in the Middle East.

2. China and Iran: Parallel History, Future Threat?

Description

China and Iran have featured heavily in the news in recent years. China is both a military and an economic superpower with 20% of the worlds population; Iran is suspected of developing nuclear weapons and arming terrorists, and sits on the worlds second-largest oil and gas reserves. They are also surprisingly close geographically: Iran is only 700 miles across Afghanistan from Chinas extreme western border. A 25-year, $100 billion deal for Iran to supply China with oil and gas and the large number of Chinese companies operating in Iran shows that the two are moving increasingly close in both political and economic terms. But what does this mean for the rest of the world, and especially for "the West?" Edward Burman examines how the strikingly similar histories of these two ancient civilizations can inform what the likely consequences for the world of an alliance between them might be.

5. The Duel: The Parallel Lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr

Feature

Description

Learn more about the men who inspired Hamilton: The Musical in this fascinating look at the historical friends turned revolutionary rivals!

In curiously parallel lives, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were both orphaned at an early age. Both were brilliant students who attended college--one at Princeton, the other at Columbia--and studied law. Both were young staff officers under General George Washington, and both became war heroes. Politics beckoned them, and each served in the newly formed government of the fledgling nation. Why, then, did these two face each other at dawn in a duel that ended with death for one and harsh criticism for the other?

Judith St. George's lively biography, told in alternating chapters, brings to life two complex men who played major roles in the formation of the United States.

6. Parallel Histories: Muslims and Jews in Inquisitorial Spain

Description

The distinct religious culture of early modern Spain -- characterized by religious unity at a time when fierce civil wars between Catholics and Protestants fractured northern Europe -- is further understood through examining the expulsion of the Jews and suspected Muslims. While these two groups had previously lived peaceably, if sometimes uneasily, with their Christian neighbors throughout much of the medieval era, the expulsions brought a new intensity to Spanish Christian perceptions of both the moriscos (converts from Islam) and the judeoconversos (converts from Judaism). In Parallel Histories, James S. Amelang reconstructs the compelling struggle of converts to coexist with a Christian majority that suspected them of secretly adhering to their ancestral faiths and destroying national religious unity in the process.
Discussing first Muslims and then Jews in turn, Amelang explores not only the expulsions themselves but also religious beliefs and practices, social and professional characteristics, the construction of collective and individual identities, cultural creativity, and, finally, the difficulties of maintaining orthodox rites and tenets under conditions of persecution. Despite the oppression these two groups experienced, the descendants of the judeoconversos would ultimately be assimilated into the mainstream, unlike their morisco counterparts, who were exiled in 1609.
Amelang masterfully presents a complex narrative that not only gives voice to religious minorities in early modern Spain but also focuses on one of the greatest divergences in the history of European Christianity.

7. Parallel Lives: A Social History of Lizzie A. Borden and Her Fall River

Feature

Profusely illustrated with 524 photographs in black & white and color.
Extensively sourced and meticulously indexed.
Smyth Sewn case bound.
Manufactured to library specifications in the United States.

Description

Lizzie A. Borden. For the majority, the name conjures up visions of a hatchet-wielding murderess, blindly considered guilty of the horrific crime of parricide. But the outcome of her sensational trial was quite the opposite: Tried by due process, she was acquitted of all charges. A free woman, she returned to Fall River, Massachusetts, her native city, to resume private life. Yet, regardless of that liberating decision, the specter of suspicion remained ever-present, haunting Lizzie relentlessly for the rest of her days. And what of Fall River? Few recollect its once-glorious past when it was hailed as the Spindle City, largest producer of cotton cloth in the United States; in this immesely lucrative textile center, the fabric that spewed from its mills generated great wealth, at the same time creating even greater poverty. Here is their story, as it has never been told. In Parallel Lives, a picture is woven of Fall River during the 19th and early-20th centuries, the city that Lizzie knew and called "home." With that city as a backdrop, Lizzie's tale unfolds. In researching this volume, the authors were permitted unprecendented access to myriad resources pertaining to Lizzie, held privately for generations. Drawing on this important, previously unpublished material, including rare letters and photographs, this book is a breakthrough as a dual history of Fall River and its most infamous citizen. Its pages reveal more new material than all other books on the subject have done before - combined! Heretofore, Lizzie has been presented as a one-dimensional character, defined by legend, innuendo, and outright lies. Now, for the first time, we meet her as a far more complex, complete individual whose personal life, albeit private, was one of grace and dignity. Meet a different Lizzie A. Borden, who was anything but the ogre fabricated by those who did not know her personally. This is the story of the city and the woman who, for 66 years, shared Parallel Lives.

8. The Match: Academic/Applied Psychology and the Chemical Dependence Field: A Parallel History of Theory, Assessment, and Treatment

Description

"I wrote this book primarily for psychologists and psychiatrists," says Alfred A. Borrelli, "since they are the major influencers in the chemical dependence field; my purpose was to change some of the thinking about assessment and treatment based on my very extensive experience of now over fifty years. There is a commitment to ideas, in all fields, that have outlived their usefulness. I don't mean that practitioners and academics have no right to keep those ideas that continue to work well; rather, I am offering a criticism of a conservative movement that has become comfortable with older ideas merely because they have a history."

In this regard, he has presented the long history of the psychological field from Plato's time to now and, in the process, suggested why some fields need to change and why some are not aware of their own history. He believes that the ideas here are new and effective, and he has presented evidence for them, because science and scientists move from established facts to established facts, not from stubbornness or loyalty to a tradition. "A final thought." he adds, "about critical acceptance of these ideas. Any production of ideas can be criticized--it is easier to be a critic than a creator. As with all pursuits, whether academic or applied, an open mind is a prerogative for success. "with regard to what i have produced, it was not my intent to cover everything thoroughly, but to provide a thorough overview, for the professional especially. "Consider this work a beginning place for the average reader to understand many issues, as well as a continuing place for those who are highly informed and skilled."
