On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed the flag act, stating that the U.S. Flag should consist of 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a blue field. In 1818, Congress passed legislation stipulating that the number of stars on the American flag should match the number of States in the Union. There are 13 stripes and 50 stars on the current flag. Check to make sure you have genuine stamps, and not counterfeits. Mail sent with counterfeit stamps can be confiscated. Genuine stamps will have microprinted letters USPS on every stamp. On the 2017 variety these letters are typically found on the right edge of the flag, visible with a magnifying glass (such as one of the images above). Genuine stamps have plate numbers such as "P1111" that appear 3 or 4 times along the bottom roll (usually every 25 stamps or so), as in the first product image. With a shortwave UV light, genuine stamps will shine with a green phosphorescent glow, while counterfeit stamps just shine bright white. The artist chose images that illustrated a major theme of each of the four carols. A lamb reflects the gentle mood of "Silent Night." Dressed in its finery, a sleigh horse represents the carol "Jingle Bells." Inspired by the lyrics of "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas," the stamp art imagines a child's hopeful monologue with Santa. For "Deck the Halls," Christmas lights and holiday cookies set the mood. The stamp art is designed so the stamps are as graphically pleasing in a group as they are individually. Familiar lyrics from each song highlight the individual stamps. The artist first sketched the artwork in pencil and then rendered it as a digital illustration.

The stamp art features ten designs, each a detail of an illustration from an American nursery catalog printed between 1891 and 1912. The design details are courtesy of The New York Botanical Garden; the catalogs are part of NYBG's Nursery and Seed Catalog Collection, one of the largest and most important such collections in the U.S. In the mid-19th century, as more people discovered the joys of ornamental and recreational gardening, thriving commercial greenhouses and nurseries marketed plants to the eager gardeners. Issue Date: February 1, 2014 The Star-Spangled Banner has been a treasured American icon ever since Francis Scott Key celebrated the sight of an American flag still flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. This stamp commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner with a photograph of the flag that flies over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore. This flag is a replica of the one that inspired Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner" after Fort McHenry withstood the British attack of September 13-14, 1814. Photographer Gary Clark took the picture of the flag against a backdrop of fireworks during an annual celebration of Defenders' Day. Defenders' Day, according to the National Park Service, is "Baltimore's oldest holiday commemorating the bombardment of Fort McHenry and the writing of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'" Clark said it was a challenge to get the fireworks and the flag in the same shot and that "the wind picked up quite a bit that night." Art director Phil Jordan designed the stamp.
